Tilikum, the orca from Blackfish, is ill

In 2013 we released Blackfish, the story of Tilikum a performing killer whale who has been involved in three high profile human deaths while in captivity. Tilikum was captured from the wild in 1983 when he was 2 years old. His captivity began at Sealand until they closed and he was bought by SeaWorld. He has remained at SeaWorld ever since, despite the captivity stress he is clearly under.

Sadly, we must now report that Tilikum is very sick and there are concerns for his life. SeaWorld veterinary and animal care teams are worried that his health is deteriorating due to a possible bacterial infection which is very strong and resisting treatment.

Blackfish has created a huge outcry throughout the world for the release of Tilikum, causing SeaWorld to alter its shows and facilities and see a reduction in numbers attending their parks. The outcry continues now with the news of Tilikum’s illness with many hoping that he will now be released into the wild for his potential final days.

The news spread fast with major publications sharing Tilikum's poor health and it trending on Facebook. Read more from:
