Steve James is an icon in the documentary world, and here at Dogwoof we have loved working with him. Most recently we released Life Itself in cinemas and it is out on DVD Monday February 23.
Steve James, best known for his documentary Hoop Dreams (1994), the story of two young basketball players from Chicago who share the dream of playing at a professional level, has been brilliant throughout his career as a documentary director.
At Dogwoof we are proud to have released three Steve James films - The first was his 2011 release The Interrupters, which is the story about of three activists in the recent violent Chicago who battle to keep their communities safe. Having once been part of their city's violent culture they now seek to eradicate this culture.
In his career Steve has also taken time to raise awareness through film of more silent issues buried around the globe, such as the concussion issue via contact sports, which he tackles himself in Head Games (2014). We released Head Games as part of our IF365 initiative in 2014, now available on VOD.
With twenty-two awards won over the course of his career and twenty-six nominations it's safe to say that Steve has had one great ride but has no intentions on slowing down, which is clear through his most recent work Life Itself. Through the lens Steve James has produced many inspirational documentaries the latest of which is Life Itself, a documentary about the amazing life of film critic Roger Ebert.
